2009 American Cancer Society/Mobile Gas Chili Cook-off
There were a lot of really good chili recipes again this year and a few bad ones. There was even one I swear had to be at least 75% VINEGAR. Some reeked (figuratively speaking of course) of way too much tomato and others were too burnt beanie. Regardless, for any taste in chili, there was a chili to be enjoyed. 2009 was the 5th year for my group to compete and I’ve had the pleasure of tasting most of the winning recipes in our division over they years. I’ve come to a single conclusion – the judges seem to be looking for chili tasting like something you would get from a fast food joint – not a chili that is unique in taste and especially not a chili that has any bite whatsoever. We’ve tweaked our recipe over the last 5 competitions to what we consider to be a really well-rounded chili and I would like to share that recipe and experience with you.
For my team, the chili cook-off is more of a public relations/customer relations and networking event than a fight to take home the prize and, at the end of the day, the event itself is for a very worthwhile cause that generates a large amount of money for the American Cancer Society and cancer research. While we would love to bring home the trophy after the event our primary interest is having a good time, making a great pot of chili, and entertaining people.
